Announcement of the New Apple iPhone 5

Dozens of media and blogging sites brought Apple fans up-to-the-minute news from Apple’s special news event in San Francisco this morning where, for the past few months, rumors have been flying that a new iPhone 5 or iPad Mini would be announced.

There has been some debate on what the name of the newest version of the iPhone would be, but it was announced today that the newest Apple iPhone will officially be called the iPhone 5. The iPhone 5 will feature a number of new features, so we will wrap up some of the major ones for you here:

iPhone 5 Body Design

The new iPhone 5 will feature a thinner and lighter body design. Apple’s head of marketing, Phil Schiller, announced today that the iPhone 5 will feature a 4” screen and an aluminum and glass body design that is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. This will allow the iPhone 5 to fit in an extra row of apps as well as allow for better video and photo viewing closer to a 16:9 aspect ratio. The phone will come in the expected two colors- black and white- with the white version featuring a brushed aluminum back. As expected, the iPhone 5 will feature a smaller dock connector called the “Lightning” adapter. This dock connector will be easier to use and is reversible, making it easier to plug devices in. It was also announced that adapters for old-style connectors will be created, although no price for these adapters was announced, undoubtedly putting many accessory junkies at ease.

iPhone 5 Video and Photo Advancements

The camera on the iPhone 5 will be the same, but with some improved features and fun improvements. The iPhone 5 camera will be thinner and reportedly 40% faster than the last model, allowing for users to take photos even faster than before. Users will also be able to take advantage of a new panorama photo mode, which is a feature many other phones currently on the market have now. Video on the iPhone 5 will be recorded in 1080p and will have the added benefits of facial detection and photo capture options during video recording- also options seen on many other phones on the market now.

iPhone 5 Internal Improvements

One of the longest awaited add-ons to any model of iPhone is the addition of 4G LTE technology, which was finally announced as included in the iPhone 5. Also included will be an A6 processor, which will produce 2X faster graphics of the device, and a slightly improved battery – although exact details of battery life wasn’t really specified.

iPhone 5 Pricing and Availability

As expected, the iPhone 5 will be released at the same no-contract pricing tiers as previous models, with the 16GB model at $199, the 32GB model at $299, and the 64GB model at $399. Similarly, the iPhone 4S will now drop in price to $99 for the 16GB model, while the iPhone 4 16GB model will now be free. Pre-orders start on Friday the 14th and product shipping starts on September 21st in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore.
