Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at HZO: An Open Letter

An open letter regarding DEI from HZO’s CEO, James T. Fahey, Ph.D.

Good morning. Good afternoon. Good evening.

I want to take this opportunity to share my thoughts on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at HZO.

When I joined HZO as CEO in April, I could not have anticipated the opportunities for growth our team would face this year, especially in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death.

In that moment I asked myself, can we do more as an organization? I posed this question as a challenge to our Senior Leadership Team. With unanimous resolve, we agreed to significantly increase our efforts to promote Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, both within the company as well as in our local communities.

Over the past few months, our Senior Leadership Team engaged external consultants to help us facilitate crucial dialogue around diversity, equity, and inclusion. United in this mission to build a more diverse and inclusive workforce, we launched a series of training sessions for all US employees, covering topics such as unconscious bias, diversity in language and communications, and racial equity and allyship.

We know that we are just beginning this journey, but I speak for the whole team when I say that we fully believe in the power of DEI to transform our business from the inside out. We are excited about the future of DEI at HZO and are fully committed to doing this work, not just as a momentary response, but as a sustained commitment to our values. To this end, I am excited to share with you our new statements that integrate DEI principles in how we hire and promote as well as the values we expect all HZO employees to uphold.

In closing, I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead HZO as we begin this new chapter. I look forward to continuing to share updates with you in the coming months.

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay strong,

Jim
