“Hope Over Despair”: HZO Celebrates Diwali
One of the perks of being a member of the team at HZO is the vast amount of cultural diversity and corresponding traditions that are openly shared and celebrated among employees. With a personnel base representing more than a dozen countries there never is a shortage of ethnic heritage to share. Dhirendra Damji, HZO’s Director of Engineering, was proof of that today when he treated the HZO Utah office to a tasty lunch of authentic Indian food and educated the company about the Hindu festival, Diwali, which is being celebrated this week.
Dhirendra’s (also known as “DD”) heritage stems from India, though he considers himself a citizen of the world having lived in various countries throughout his life. Diwali holds a special place in his heart as the holiday conjures up memories of joy.
Diwali is one of the largest festivals in the Hindu culture and a happy highlight for many. For five days in autumn, the festival is celebrated continuously, with the third day (October 22 in 2014) being known as Diwali or the “festival of lights”. The festival itself represents the “victory over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair.”
Participants celebrate the holiday by cleaning their homes, illuminating them with lamps and candles and dressing in new clothing. Fireworks can be heard overhead throughout the week as the exchange of gifts among family members and friends takes place.
Here at HZO, we wish DD, Vimal and others who celebrate this “festival of lights,” a happy Diwali!
