HZO Faces: YANG YUN

hzo_yangMeet Yang Yun, the head of HZO’s R&D team. Yang joined HZO in mid-2013 and is on a mission to keep HZO in the lead to keep electronics safe from harm. Yang’s position includes a perfect blend of hands-on, strategy, and leadership of a team of talented PHds, scientists and engineers.

He starts each day meeting with his team to understand the experiments they are designing and their most recent data collections and results. Yang also spends a significant amount of time thinking about innovation and opportunities to improve HZO’s growing body of intellectual property.

Important to Yang, he is constantly developing his extremely talented team. He takes the teachings of K’ung-fu-tzu, better known in the West as Confucius, to heart and puts them to practice in his own life. One particular philosophy he practices regularly is to “stop three times each day and reflect on what I did well and where I can make improvements.” In fact, we frequently witness Yang taking short meditative walks around our building.

Yang tries to maximize ever minute of his life and rarely is frivolous with words, but we were able to get him to open up a bit. We learned quite a lot from those bits.

 If you were to die today, what would be your last meal?

If it were my last day, I wouldn’t have time to eat. I’d spend my last hours finishing writing my book of philosophies.

 If you could meet one person (living or dead) who would it be?

George Washington. I want to know how he made his decision to walk away from power, even though he had multiple opportunities to hang on to it.

 What is the best advise you ever got?

At 10, my father encouraged me to develop my own thinking; to broaden my eye by “reading thousands of books and traveling thousands of miles”.

My college advisor also gave me great advice:

-Work hard;

-Let the other person finish asking his question without interruption;

-Learn to be quiet.

 What is one of your all-time dreams?

To help employees reach their potential, figuring out what they are good at and letting that shine.

 What do you miss about being a kid?

A kid thinks with zero gravity. They know no bias.

 What is your life slogan?

“Be the sun in winter.”
