HZO, Mechanical Seals & “What If’s”

Over a year and a half ago, we posted a write up on our blog about the differences in traditional device waterproofing (mechanical seals), versus Nano-coatings (HZO technology). With more and more devices entering the market claiming to be “waterproof” we feel believe this differentiation is still as relevant and as important as ever.

These days, people take their electronic devices everywhere and they expect them to be waterproof. We take photos at the beach, use fitness trackers in the pool, tweeting and texting from the shower, and let’s be honest bath time just isn’t the same without checking your Instagram and Facebook feeds on your new tablet. We get it. The problem is that water is in more places then you realize, and we want to take our electronics everywhere we go. We constantly hear stories of devices breaking from the steam during a hot shower, or even dying from after coming in contact with sweat during a quick jog. Water can creep into devices in more ways than we can see, and what may be considered a “safe place” to rest your device may not really be safe at all.

When there is no barrier between water and the precious electronic components inside of your device, sooner or later, water will find a way to get inside, and companies all over the world are trying to stop this problem. Everywhere you turn there is a new phone, wearable, or tablet being announced with the added benefit of “waterproof” protection. The question is: Are they really waterproof?

Traditional Device Waterproofing: Mechanical Seals

For a phone, camera, tablet, etc. to be called waterproof, it has to be completely sealed against water. Most companies add this protection by either “ruggedizing” the device, which generally makes it pretty big and bulky, or by adding special rubber seals or gaskets to the casing of the device to act as a barrier against water ingress. Physical barriers sound like a great idea, until you consider the fact that these seals can wear out or get damaged and dislodged. When the device is dropped, when the temperature around the device becomes too hot or cold, or when the seal is not placed properly to begin with, the so called protection will allow water and moisture inside the device. Even a tiny amount of water can cause long term problems with corrosion and short circuiting that won’t be noticed until it’s too late. There are too many “what if’s” and unknown variables that could cause these seals to fail, and when that happens, say goodbye to all of the pictures you took last Christmas, plus all of those shots of the best grilled cheese you ever ate. They are gone for good, unless you backed them up in the cloud.

Now that you know these “waterproof” devices are susceptible to risk, this is where we HZO comes in.
