At HZO we love a good “dunk” story. Recently, a friend of the company decided to do a side-by-side comparison of a mechanically sealed phone against her HZO Protected iPhone 6. She decided to bypass the typical scenario of a room temperature water dunk test and go straight for the unexpected–submersion in hot soup. Yes, hot Phone soup. While both phones survived the initial exposure, the mechanically sealed phone died a few days later. The HZO Protected iPhone 6 is still functioning normally.
So why did the mechanically sealed phone die even though all of the ports were sealed tight with the plugs intended to protect the inside of the phone? We have a theory. Fluctuating temperatures cause rubber and other materials to shrink and expand, damaging the seals and causing voids where moisture can sneak in and wreak havoc. A recent CNET article points out that “unless otherwise specified, most tests conducted on water protected products are carried out at temperatures between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius. (60 to 95 Fahrenheit). Higher temperatures in places like saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs could damage the device.” In other words, unless you live in a temperature controlled biosphere, you may run in to some liquid protection problems for your water resistant electronic device.
Here is another area where the durability and effectiveness of HZO’s solution stands out against the competition. The HZO material has proven to be thermally stable in temperatures ranging from -50ºC (-58ºF) to 120ºC (248ºF). To put it in perspective, the HZO material can survive the average high winter temperature at the South Pole in March (-50.3ºC) all the way to the roasting temperature of a Herbcrusted Spring Lamb (120ºC). Since HZO’s core technology can eliminate the need for the use of mechanical seals or gaskets and is resistant to such a wide range of temperature exposure, the threat of compromised protection due to material changes essentially goes away.
In other words, wherever your adventures in an HZO Protected World take you, from late night snowshoeing in the Rockies to a dip in the Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa, you’ll know your devices can come along as well, safe from the extreme conditions and able to function when you need them most—even to get that impressive shot of the bottom of your soup bowl.
