Another Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is in the books as exhibiting companies have revealed what 2018 and beyond will hold for their respective product lines and industries.
The show’s attendance likely surpassed 2017’s 184K+ record, but if you weren’t one of those attendees (or chose not to be), we walked the floor and analyzed the announcements for you. The following is just some of the noteworthy trends at the show.
Voice Assistant & AI
At CES 2017, Amazon’s voice assistant, Alexa, stole the show by being featured in many ‘smart’ products including speakers, thermostats, TVs and more. Not to be outdone this year, Google invested heavily in CES 2018 to promote their voice assistant, Google Assistant. Wherever you looked, you seem to run into a product, person, monorail, or sign sporting the technology. Expect to see the competition continue as both companies battle to see who will be the ‘voice’ of many smart products and devices going forward.
Virtual Reality & Augmented Reality
The 1990’s promised a future encompassing us in virtual worlds. The technology of the day, however, just never seemed to advance at a quick enough pace. Fast forward to 2018 and Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) are beginning to become a reality as the technology is improving in resolution and haptic feedback. Unlikely company leaders in the VR space is Oculus (owned by Facebook) and HTC are presenting worlds of more realistic gaming and social interaction. Ready Player One may be closer than we realize.
Robots were a surprising trend at CES 2018. They came in all shapes and sizes from roving personal assistants, Ping Pong players, Scrabble champions, grocery delivery, nannies and even adorable puppies from Sony. Will you have a walking robot in your home next year doing your laundry? Likely not as the technology needs to mature significantly. However, begin to look for small progress as the industry continues to evolve.
Water, Water, Everywhere…
Maybe we at HZO have aqua colored glasses, but CES 2018 had more than its fair share of waterproof, water resistant and water protection deficient products from a wide variety of industries. External locks, underwater drones, robots, headphones and critical components in automotive and IoT all exhibited a need for water protection as technology continues to get smaller, more mobile and pushing the limits of constant connectivity.
