Unprecedented Times, Unparalleled People: How COVID-19 is Changing Our Connections
Mallory McGuinness | April 29, 2020
Covid-19 has affected us all. It has introduced significant challenges and uncertainty into the lives of every human being across the globe.
But in today’s unprecedented times, one thing is sure: technology has made coming together possible, and coming together has made technology even more indispensable.
As a substantial part of the world population is on lockdown to contain the pandemic, people are turning to technology more than ever, to work, communicate, and stay in touch with loved ones.
The popular video conferencing company Zoom recently revealed that the number of daily users in online meetings had hit 300 million. That marks an increase of 30 times in just four months. Similarly, Microsoft Teams reported a user base of 44 million – up from 20 million in a single month.
Along with work applications like Zoom and Teams, people are making use of technological tools in their personal lives, causing a surge in downloads of video chat apps. Around the globe, downloads of Skype, and Houseparty each rose by more than 100% in March.
Electronic devices are being used more than ever right now. Connected TVs are in more use for news and streaming services as people strive to keep current with important events. We are spending more time using our phones on social media sites and using services like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to communicate with our friends.
Worldwide, people have been changing their general lifestyles to protect each other from illness, and we are using technology to do the things that make us human. Using a device to “connect” no longer means using it to go online. It means we are using our devices to connect to each other.
At HZO, we have always agreed that when people have the right tools, they will do great things with them and that the technology we safeguard is best when it brings people closer. Our mission is to protect what matters most to you, and right now, that is the ability to stay connected even while we stay inside to keep each other safe.
You build the devices, and we’ll make them resilient so that people around the world can keep connecting no matter what the circumstances are. Let’s all make great things happen together.
…people are turning to technology more than ever, to work, communicate, and stay in touch with loved ones.
